APPLICATION PROCESS FOR NEW MEDIATORS

 

New Mediators are applicants that have recently completed an Idaho Mediation Association approved mediation training, have been observed practicing mediation, and are recommended by a mentoring Certified Professional Mediator.

New Mediator Training Requirements

  • 40 hours of basic mediation courses completed within the last 5 years.
  • Thirty percent or more of the basic mediation training must be devoted to the practice of mediation via learning exercises or role-play simulations of mediated disputes.
  • 40 hours of additional mediation training completed within the last 5 years. Additional training may be in a specialization area such as child custody, workplace, real estate, etc., or be training or taking classes directly related to mediation; including, but not limited to, conflict management, negotiation, group facilitation, interpersonal communication, or other collaborative problem-solving or consesus-seeking processes. 
  • All training needs to be from an accredited college program, IMA certified, or a structured program that included mediation training and all training must include 30% as interactive learning components such as role play. 

New Mediator Experience Requirements

 

The case practice experience must include:

  •  20 hours of mentored mediation
  •  20 hours of Lead or Solo mediation

This should strictly be limited to mediation practice and not include facilitation, arbitration, or other forms of dispute resolutions.


Applying for Certification

A Complete Application Includes

 

o       Proof of membership

  • If you have previously registered as a member of IMA, please email the Administrator for a letter stating that you are a member in good standing to include with your application.
  • If you are not a member in good standing, please print the application and include the application and your dues with your CPM application.

o       $75 CPM Application Processing Fee (and a $35 Membership Fee if a new member)

 

o       Letter of Reference

  • Applicants must provide a letter from a current CPM in good standing who has observed the applicant’s mediation skills and can attest to the applicant’s competency.                                           

o       Cover letter:

•  Your name as you would like it to appear on your CPM certificate

•  Your mailing address, phone number and email address

•  Date the application was prepared for submission

•  A brief description of your training and experience and how it will apply to your practice as a

professional mediator.

 

oAffidavit of Compliance:

Applicants must submit a notarized Affidavit of Compliance certifying that they are fully informed and in agreement with the IMA  and CPM professional requirements for ethics, standards and practices,  and grievance procedures. Additionally, the applicant attests to true  and complete application materials. 

 

o       Documentation of 40 Hour Basic Mediation

  • If the mediation class you completed is included on the Training and Education Committee list of approved courses listed on the IMA website, please only indicate the dates of the training, the instructor, and provide a Certificate of Completion.
  • If the course was provided at a college or university, please provide a transcript showing a passing grade and the course syllabus.

If you completed other mediation training, you are required to provide the following:

• Name and contact information of the sponsoring organization

 

• Title of the education/training activity

 

• Instructor(s) names(s) and title(s)

 

• Date(s) and location(s)

 

• Method of presentation

 

• Total hours of instruction including amount of mediation scenarios or mock mediations

 

• A brochure, syllabus, or written document describing the training

 

• Certificates of completion issued by the individual or organization that

   conducted the training

o Documentation of 40 hours of additional training

  • If the traditional training you completed is included on the Training and Education Committee list of approved trainings listed on the IMA website, you need only to indicate the dates of the training, the instructor and provide a Certificate of Completion.
  • If the course was provided at a college or university, please provide a transcript showing a passing grade and the course syllabus.

If you completed other mediation training, you are required to provide the following:

• Name and contact information of the sponsoring organization

 

• Title of the education/training activity

 

• Instructor(s) names(s) and title(s)

 

• Date(s) and location(s)

 

• Method of presentation

 

• Total hours of instruction including amount of mediation scenarios or mock mediations

oDocumentation of 20 hours of Mentored Mediation Practice

  • Completed IMA Mediation Log showing 20 hours of mentored mediation that is signed by both the applicant and the mentor

oDocumentation of 20 hours of Lead or Solo Mediation Practice

  • Completed IMA Mediation Log showing 20 hours of Lead or Solo mediation that is signed by applicant

oTwo (2) Memoranda of Understanding

 

Provide two of  (2) Memoranda of understanding (MOU) written by you, your skills in writing short and long short and long agreements. 

 

The purpose of these MOUs is to provide IMA with examples of the type of writing required of professional mediators.  They should represent areas of mediation that you have training or experience in.

  • Your short MOU should use a minimum of seven clauses, include a minimum of one future clause and be one page.

  • Your long MOU should use a minimum of 20 clauses, include a minimum of one future clause and be 3 to 4 pages.

  You may base your MOUs on any of the following:

 

  • A simulated Memoranda of Understanding.

The simulation may be derived from your mediation case practice, cases of have read about, a combination or synthesis of several cases, or simply from your imagination.  Even though it is a simulation, it should represent an area of mediation that you are trained in.

 

  • A neutralized Memoranda of Understanding from your mediation case practice.

A neutralized MOU changes names, and personal data, in order to protect the anonymity of the disputants.  You may black out personal information or change it.

 

  • An edited case Memoranda of Understanding

A Memoranda of Understanding from your mediation case practice where you have taken an actual case and changed details, language or out come to better represent your MOU writing ability.
